Students in grades
6 - 8 whose directors are current members of LMEA are
eligible to audition. A student auditioning for
the District Honor Band must be a member of the school's instrumental
music program.

AUDITION
REQUIREMENTS:

a prepared etude,
and sight reading
as described below.

Scales (30%)
- Students are responsible for six major scales in the concert
keys of G, C, F, B-flat, E-flat, and A-flat, as well as their chromatic
scale.will be played in eighth notes, tongued ascending and slurred descending.
The following chart indicates the number of octaves for each
scale. (Click on an instrument for individual scales
sheets in PDF format.)
Note:
All scales are listed in CONCERT keys except the chromatic
scale. The chromatic scale actually gives the actual starting note.
Batter Percussion will be required to play rudiments
instead of scales. All rudiments
must be played as "open-closed-open." The required rudiments
include the following:

Single stroke
roll • Double stroke roll •
Five stroke roll •
Paradiddle •
Flam •
Flam tap.
Timpani will be required to demonstrate
the proper tuning of two timpani
to concert F (low) and concert C (high) using a pitch pipe.

Etudes (40%) - are found in the Rubank Intermediate Method Book. The
page and etude number are listed below. Be careful to select the etude from the correct listing
- "Even
Years" or "Odd Years"
indicated the year of the audition,

Sight-Reading
(30%) Note that all chair ties are broken by the sight-reading
score. All
students will be required to sight read a short piece.
They are encouraged to practice sight reading
in various time signatures and keys and be comfortable with accidentals
and a variety of rhythms (including
syncopation, triplets, dotted rhythms, and rests).
SELECTION
PROCESS:
The
selection
process is based
on the cumulative scale, etude, and sight-reading score. All chair ties will be broken by the sightreading score.
AUDITION

results will be posted as soon as available - usually the night
